The bipinnately compound leaves carry one or two pairs of pinnae, each bearing 10 to 26 leaflets. In mid-summer, stalked pale pink or purple flower heads eight to ten millimetres across emerge from leaf axils; individual florets are brittle, with red upper petals and pink-to-lavender filaments, and each lasts less than a day. Pollen grains are circular, roughly eight microns in diameter. Fruits form as clusters of two to eight prickly-margined pods, each one to two centimetres long, splitting into two to five segments that hold pale brown seeds about 2.5 millimetres long. The species is tetraploid with 52 chromosomes and belongs to the legume family Fabaceae. In the United Kingdom it holds the Royal Horticultural Society's Award of Garden Merit.
A Global Wanderer
Native to the Caribbean and the tropical regions of South and Central America, Mimosa pudica has since become a pantropical presence. It now colonises the Southern United States—spanning states from Florida and Texas to Virginia and Maryland, plus Puerto Rico, Guam, and the Virgin Islands—along with South Asia, East Asia, Southeast Asia, Micronesia, Australia, South Africa, and West Africa. In Asian countries including India, Thailand, Indonesia, Japan, the Philippines, Vietnam, Cambodia, Laos, Singapore, Bangladesh, Nepal, Malaysia, Taiwan, and Sri Lanka it is well established.
The plant thrives in full sun and prefers soils with low nutrient concentrations; it is not shade-tolerant. In Australia it is a declared weed in the Northern Territory and Western Australia, with control measures recommended in Queensland.
